Tea from the Cloud Mountain

Awhile back we noted on this blog about mist and tea flavor. Now, we tell you about a special mountain called the Cloud Mountain. It’s located in the Jinggu County, Simao Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China.

2011 Spring Jinggu Cloud Mountain Old-Tree Raw Pu-erh Cake – 250g/cake

The exact location of this mountain is only known to a small number of people. It is part of a group of tea mountains in Jinggu county that were once cultivated by the Wai minority for about 400 years. The Wai abandoned them around 100 years ago due to the remoteness and inconvenience of living at such a high elevation (it would take hours to get to a town, and even longer if the roads were washed out). The JK Teashop, with whom we have a good relationship, rediscovered this tea-growing area and the Cloud Mountain in particular about three year ago. The tea trees continued to grow but had gone wild, no longer cultivated.

Now, the tea trees continue growing uncultivated and are harvested for about two months of the year when the JK Tea Shop tea makers camp out on the mountain. They process the harvested leaves into their own máochá (raw pu-erh material). During this time they rely on others to supply them with food (rice, greens, etc.). The máochá is then brought down to their factories and further processed into teas that are rare and exquisite. The taste of the new tea is described as common and weak in comparison to Menghai’s old tea, but the tea becomes strong and thicker as it ages. It is great for long-term storage and will develop a wonderful wild-honey aroma mixed with wildflowers. Some say this is due to the climate and soil on Cloud Mountain. These things certainly don’t hurt.
